Thanks to the internet bingo is no longer played just in halls. Online bingo is hugely popular. The history of bingo has been traced back to a lottery game played in Italy in the 16th century.

The game has developed and changed hugely over the years. It was played with dried beans and known as “beano”. The beans were used to cover the numbers once they had been called off. Edwin Lowe, an American salesman, discovered the game being played at a carnival in Atlanta. He saw how excited people were when playing and when he arrived back in New York he introduced the game to his friends and then put it on sale for the general public. The word bingo was first recorded as being used in England. When Lowe was playing with his friends one accidentally called out “bingo” instead of “beano” and the name stuck. Bingo was introduced to the UK in the 1960s.

Bingo is now accessible to most people who have a computer or laptop and an internet connection. There are hundreds of online bingo sites and companies who started out in bingo halls (such as Mecca) are now running websites as well. Bingo is a very social game and thanks to the chat rooms which nearly all sites have this aspect hasn’t been lost. People can now play anytime they like in the comfort of their own homes. Nights and weekends are the most popular times for players to log on and these are times when bingo websites run their biggest promotions.
